Couples remain together from fear of debt

Over a quarter of those asked admit they are less likely to leave their partners in the current economic climate due to worries about falling into debt, new research shows.

Figures from cahoot, an online bank, show 27 per cent of respondents say they are less likely to split up with their significant other as a direct result of the credit crunch.

The research suggests 12.4 million people are unwilling to face the higher bills, rent and other costs of living alone.

Six per cent more men than women, nearly a third, were afraid to face the debt risk created by the additional expenses of life alone.

The managing director of cahoot, Matthew Timms, says: "The cost of being single can extend to thousands each year, but with a little careful financial planning you needn't be tied to your partner purely for financial reasons."

A survey conducted earlier in the week by Yorkshire Building Society revealed 15 per cent of women asked were financially dependent on their partner and would face debt if they were unable to work.
